Sky Cinema | To Olivia | Animated Title Sequence

I was commissioned by Atticus Film & Television to create an animated title sequence for their Sky Cinema drama, ‘To Olivia’.

The film takes place during the year Patricia Neal (Keeley Hawes) and Roald Dahl (Hugh Bonneville) lost their daughter, Olivia, to measles encephalitis, at the age of 7.

The director John Hay wanted an animated title sequence, inspired by the colours of the 1960s and the work of Saul Bass, to describe the life of Patricia Neal and Roald Dahl. The title sequence begins with events that occurred during the early years of their respective lives, up to the point they met, their move to Great Missenden and then on to 1961, where the film begins

In the initial design stages, I began with putting together a simple storyboard - below - based off a rough outline and incorporating the colour palette I had discussed with the director. Once the boards had been given the green light, I worked in photoshop and procreate to start fleshing out the keyframes and building an animatic before bringing each scene to final completion. I illustrated and animated all the elements in the animation - title credits, title design, backgrounds, animated elements - over the course of 4 months with deliverables handed over to the post-production house in July of 2021.
